Brahma[the creator], Vishnu[the preserver], and Shiva[the destroyer] are all
different forms of the Guru. The Vedas and Puranas all describe the greatness
of the Guru.Om Glory...

One can perform recitation of mantras, penance, go on pilgrimages, do other
kinds of benevolent works and millions and millions of spiritual practices,
but without the grace and support of the Guru one cannot attain realization.
