No Sufi Dancing Allowed

Neem Karoli Baba MaharajjiOne of the funniest stories I can convey about being with Baba was a group of devotees started spontaneously doing a Sufi circle dance in the middle of the courtyard at the temple in Kainchi.

They were whirling and screaming out Sufi stuff about God knows what, spinning back and forth in a circle. Probably there was some Allah talk.

Maharajji came out of his office and started screaming at them to stop immediately. Needless to say that was the beginning and end of Sufi dancing at the temple.

The people who organized it, (they shall remain nameless) faded into the background, then everything was as right as rain.

He Came to Me in a Dream

Neem Karoli Baba Maharajji I had not thought of Babaji for many years. Back in the late 60's early 70's I was incredibly drawn to him but could not go to India. I spoke to him often in my head.

Now many, many years later I have this dream:

Neem Karoli Babaji was standing in front of me. He was wearing a long plaid blanket. He looked at me and yelled something and immediately dove at my right foot and grabbed it.

I was so shocked and felt so unworthy that I reacted by pulling back. He then immediately was standing again, hollered something else, and dove at my left foot and grabbed it. End.

Upon awakening and remembering the dream I felt elated for the experience and sorrow that I reacted by pulling back.

Half-Naked Sadhu in the 1st Class Compartment

Neem Karoli Baba, Baba Neeb Karori Maharajji when he was a young man"In His fancy, a young 'yogi' carrying a chimta (a pair of tongs) and a 'kamandal' in his hand boarded a first class compartment of the Tundla bound train at Farrukhadab station. The train had gone a few miles when an Anglo Indian, T. T. E. came to check tickets and was taken aback to see a half-naked sadhu in the first class compartment. On demanding the ticket and getting a negative reply, he lost his temper and ungraciously compelled the sadhu to get down at the next Neebkarori halt.

The sadhu quietly sat under the tree and dug the pair of tongs in the earth. The train got the green light signal to leave. The engine was started, but the train did not move further. The steam was applied with full force, but the wheels turned round and round at their place. The engine was checked throughly and everything was found in order.

Being worried the European guard came to the driver and asked him what the matter was. The driver could not point out any fault. Nothing was found. Despite all efforts the engine would not budge. By now it was time for some other trains to pass by on that track.

First Darshan of Neem Karoli Maharaj

Neem Karoli Baba MaharajjiI was working as a lecturer in Govt. Training College, Allahabad since Jan 1946. Mrs. E.B. Joshi was the principal of the college that time. She was very well known throughout the State on account of her deep knowledge and wisdom. Later on she was selected in Indian Administrative Services and joined her new post in 1952.

This college was completely shifted to Agra in July 1950. All the teachers and the students resided together in one hostel at Agra. The Bangalow allotted to the principal was quite spacious and was at a little distance.

I and one of my fellow lecturers used to go for sleep at night in that particular bungalow. In the evening Smt. Joshi would talk to us regarding many subjects and we felt ashamed on account of our ignorance about these subjects.

One day in 1950-51 during her talks about the saints and sages she referred to one saint who used to come from Almorah. She told that he is omniscient, omnipresent and whatever comes out of his mouth becomes truth. Since the very day I developed an intense desire to see this miraculous Baba.

Epilogue

Neem Karoli Baba MaharajjiI visited his ashrams for a couple of years after Babaji took his samadhi.

It was during these visits that I realised I was not fitting in well under the new environment.

Sometimes I could not decide what was to be done.

Then I was reminded of what he had said in 1962,

"Dada, you stay at home."

I did not understand then why he wanted me to do so.

The understanding came when my excursions to his ashrams proved to be a failure.
